A Guide to Jewelry Care During Summer
Summer is one of my favorite seasons! Paddle boarding, hiking, beach picnics, and all that jazz. The biggest drawback to this time of year is that it can be harsh on your jewelry. So, to help you keep your jewelry in sparkling condition, here's a guide to summer jewelry care!
Opt for higher-quality waterproof jewelry
Gold fill, solid gold, and sterling silver are your friends when it comes to summer wear and tear. These metals are 100% waterproof and won't turn your skin green. Avoid gold vermeil or gold plated jewelry—these budget alternatives will turn your skin green.
Beach or pool? Either way, clean your jewelry after a dip
Chlorine, salt water, sunscreen, and even sweat(!) are rough on jewelry. Make sure to wash your jewelry clean with mild soap and warm water to get rid of any chemicals or residue that lingers at the end of the day.
Take it off before lathering up
Sunscreen is important! But, before applying it to your skin, it's best to remove your jewelry to protect it from the chemicals commonly found in sunscreen. Once your sunscreen is applied, let is soak into your skin for a few minutes before putting your necklaces, rings, and bracelets back on.
Didn't take your jewelry off? No sweat—wash the jewelry in warm, soapy water to show it some love.
Keep silver tarnishing at bay
Sterling silver naturally tarnishes, meaning that the metal develops a darker patina. This is totally normal (more on why this happens here)!
Fortunately, there are ways to slow the tarnishing process. Wear your sterling silver jewelry frequently this summer—the oils in your skin naturally condition the metal and slow tarnishing. When you're not wearing your sterling silver pieces, store them in an airtight container.
